True. The card is a CardBus, it is stamped on it :)

True.. Could it be that the FIXUP is only for the second slot, as 
happens on my old thinkpad?
I left the card in the slot where it worked - no "physical" change. Same 
generic kernel that worked "once" after being installed. To test your 
FIXUP I suppose I need to compile my own kernel or can I use some option 
for a quick test?

If I leave the card in, the computer boots, no interface. If I boot 
without and insert it later (in the known good slot) it will tell me 
that cardbus in cardslot0 and crashes

It is as something changed in the BIOS? It looks quite simple though and 
I see no options about PCI/PCMCIA or similar.

Dmesg below - I copied it through usb to another computer.
