My first thought when reading this was that you could have an
"Advanced Format" disk with 4K sectors (as you have 1 TB 2.5" drives,
especially then this can be the case!), but your alignment at a first
look seems horribly wrong for such a disk, which would lead to your
"slow I/O"...
Can you investigate this further? And what is the exact disk model you use?
Apart from that, there are in fact tools which can correct this
misalignment (but always make a backup before :)). Most drive
manufacturers offer a free version of an Acronis tool for their
products.
