I don't know what the NetBSD people plan to do, that's in other people's hands.

But I found a NetBSD wiki page,

What is really needed is to cure sysinst of its aversion to already-mounted
directories.  If sysinst could install to a mounted directory, it would work
on GPT as well as MBR partitioning, even if it couldn't set up the bootability 
by itself.  User might have to chroot to the new installation, 
"man installboot", and run installboot.  It would still be necessary to boot
grub2 to get to this partition for booting.
