This could be a DocBook problem, as it was very accurately described
many years ago as first emerging with version 4.4 of DB. In fact,
reverting my test xml docs back to version 4.3 solves my problem.  But
that doesn't seem much of a solution.

These are, again, the error messages from either the nsgmls or onsgmls
or parsers:

> nsgmls:/usr/pkg/share/xml/docbook/4.4/ent/isogrk4.ent:43:30:E: "1D6C3"

> nsgmls:/usr/pkg/share/xml/docbook/4.4/ent/isogrk4.ent:44:30:E: "1D6D8"
> is not a character number in the document character set
> nsgmls:/usr/pkg/share/xml/docbook/4.4/ent/isogrk4.ent:45:30:E: "1D6AB"
> is not a character number in the document character set
> nsgmls:/usr/pkg/share/xml/docbook/4.4/ent/isogrk4.ent:46:30:E: "1D6C5"
> is not a character number in the document character set

I will plod ahead as it seems counter-intuitive that all Docbook work
in emacs with psgmls is limited to Docbook version 4.3.
