Just a correction: Microsoft seldom writes anything but "generic drivers".
Instead, as a vendor, you get a SDK (and maybe certifications, etc.) for
your driver work. You have to ask someone who does device drivers for living
to know whether that model is better than the open source one from a software
engineering POV (it probably is).
