Neither RRD nor MRTG actually know anything about network throughput
but only about data storage and graphing. They rely on helper
scripts to provide the data. The mrtg package from pkgsrc includes
such a script
http://ftp.netbsd.org/pub/NetBSD/packages/pkgsrc/net/mrtg/files/netstat2mrtg
which just calls netstat and uptime and parses the output.
