Not sure if this will help work out what is wrong here, but I always
build with:

    env -i PATH=$PATH USER=$USER LOGNAME=$LOGNAME MAKECONF=/dev/null \
       ./build.sh ...

John- might be an interesting experiment to rule out environmental
concerns.
