Re: Almost there...

Hi Anne,

While this is a bit "dirty", it might be helpful - I am sending you my own
/etc/X11/xorg.conf from my NetBSD 5.0.1 USB-stick. It is not Thinkpad-specific,
but actually starts X on several different computers. - What you should do:

1. try it as it is, just save it and say startx; if this does not work:
2. try setting ONLY the resolution that you have. - I read somewhere that it is
possible that X "jumps over" the correct settings, as it initially believes
other settings to be more suitable, but that then it turns out that these other
settings do not work at all. So if you can have e.g. 1024x768 and 16 bit
colour-depth, try allowing JUST THIS, i.e., erase all the other possibilities
and set the default depth to 16.

I am using the vesa driver. This really should work. Your other chance is to
say hello to the early 1990s and try 640x480 and colour-depth 8 with vga - but
I guess then you would not be all too happy.

If this here DOES actually work, then you might wish to try out some other
driver than vesa.

Tell me whether this worked.

Kind regards,

Nino
