Wpa_cli gives: Association request to the driver failed

I haVe two USB wireless sticks.  One is seen as ral0 by the generic
kernel 5.0.1.
The other is seen at rum0.

When I start wpa_supplican with the option -d, I can see that both
sticks see my SSID
and its MAC address.

Have anybody else tried to use WPA-kommunication with USB-sticks?
