Jukka, Steven,

does the problem go away for you if you:

ln -s /usr/X11R7/lib/X11/xkb /var/db/xkb

This is apparantly the default path for xkbcomp in the newer xorg-server.

I think we should explicitly set XKM_OUTPUT_DIR to the old path under /usr
in xsrc/external/mit/xorg-server/include/xkb-config.h?
