I have investigated a little further:
- when non-localized (default en_US), xcdroast worls like a charm
- when localized in french (either fr_FR.UTF-8 or fr_FR.ISO8859-15
(LANG & LC_ALL)), two problems appear:
 1) french accents are not corrctly displayed
 2) xcdroast crashes when entering setup

I will file two bugs.
