How can I scan for available ssid's?

In FreeBSD, I can scan for available hotspot ssid's using:

ifconfig [wireless device] up
ifconfig [wireless device] scan

I tried this command in NetBSD 4.0; but received the following message:

ifconfig: scan: bad value

How can I scan for available hotspot ssid's?
