I disabled this option but it didn't change anything.
After that I installed NetBSD-CURRENT (as of March 13, as far as I
remember) on a spare partition and the nfe worked. The vr still had the
same problems and only worked with ACPI disabled.
After looking into the if_nfe.c diff between 4.0 and CURRENT the only
relevant change seems to be in the media select code.
So I added a 'media 100baseTX' to my ifconfig.nfe0 and the card works
fine now.
I can live with this solution since I need only one NIC, but if somebody
is still interested in solving this, I'll be happy providing more
information.
