Which X driver to use for genfb?

After much assistance, I've finally got my new Gateway box running. Now I need to get X windows up.

The machine has an E1-2500 processor, and claims "Radeon HD 8240" on-board graphics. However, booting a GENERIC kernel gives this dmesg:

genfb0 at pci0 dev 1 function 0: vendor 0x1002 product 0x9838 (rev.0x00)
genfb0: framebuffer at 0xc0000000, size 800x600, depth 32, stride 3328
wsdisplay0 at genfb0 ...

My Xorg.log contains

        [ 1029.726] (--) PCI:*(0:0:1:0) 1002:9838:1025:0800 rev 0, Mem @

        [ 1029.849]
        Fatal server error:

Any hint on how to proceed?
