i810e vs "vesa" driver--how to get more than 1MB (640x480)?

Trying to work around xsrc/48344 by using the "vesa" driver instead of
the "intel" driver.  Using NetBSD/i386-6.99.25 with native Xorg.

On the whole, it works--switches to graphics mode and produces a usable
display.  The down side is that the driver only sees 1MB of RAM available,
limiting the display to 640x480 (default 24-bit depth).

(I'm using a 1280x1024 LCD display and it works properly using the intel
driver under netbsd-5.  On a CRT, I can get 1400x1050 easily.)

I tried using the "VideoRam <n KB>" attribute in the "Device" section of
"xorg.conf", but it seems to have no effect.

The machine's BIOS (DELL Optiplex GX110) provides no configuration items
for the video adapter other than interrupt assignment.

Any tricks for getting the "vesa" driver to produce a higher-resolution
display on i810e-based systems (DELL Optiplex GX110 in particular)?
