mvsata problem

I've plugged an Adaptec 1420SA pci-x card into a Dell PowerEdge 2600.  If I 
boot current on the box with no disks attached to the card I get the dmesg 
output that is attached at the end of this.  However if I attach a single 
sata disk to the card the machine crashes on boot with this:
