I was going to suggest the old Imagen stack -- there is a minor licensing
issue which I think could be cleared up with a few phone calls -- but it
looks like a more modern alternative, actively maintained and suitably
licensed, would be uIP:

I don't know about "understandable" -- it's aimed at 8-bit microcontrollers.
However, hopefully its type usage is not too crazy and it could be reasonably
used in a 32-bit environment.
