I've been meaning to try the write-devices.diff patch from Darryl Dixon.
(probably inspired by copy-devices.diff from Matt McCutchen)

http://gitweb.samba.org/?p=rsync-patches.git;a=blob;f=write-devices.diff;h=42d9c804e2b6d19282f11097f26c069564c92cea;hb=8763cc5d2a566cfa3de2624addf37ffe3888f2a9

...so you can rsync an (unmounted) device to a file, and when your
original disk fails, dd the file back to a new device.
