I am sorry about the choice. Gnome and KDE both are bloatware with so
many inter dependencies that break at every release or minor upgrade.
Way too many regressions.

I sincerely recommend XFCE with bits of gnome like the gdm and system
monitor used in XUbuntu. Please install XUBuntu first and try this out
before you reject the idea. Its fast, clean, minimal clutter and will
not be hell to maintain.
