From /etc/ttys:

ttyE7   "/usr/libexec/getty Pc"         vt220   off secure

From /etc/X11/xdm/Xservers:

:0 local /usr/X11R7/bin/X :0 vt08 -nolisten tcp


I should emphasise that I am not setting up a new X installion - native xorg
was working fine until the mouse stopped moving vertically...
