It never attempts to negotiate authentication mechanisms with the target
machine.

Anyone else seeing anything similar? Any clues on what to try?

I see something similar if I ssh from my Eee with Ubuntu to my NetBSD
4.0 machine, but only if I use IPv6, not when using IPv4. It gets this
far:
<snip>

Well, IPv6 is definitely not my problem, since I run a strictly-IPv4 network here. My (non-modular) kernel doesn't even have IPv6 compiled in.
