Thanks for the advice!

I patch up /etc/ttys with a program; it produced the following.  Doesn't
look quite right, does it?  I will correct this and see how much better
things work.

console "/usr/libexec/getty std.19200"          vt100   on secure
constty "/usr/libexec/getty std.19200"          vt100   on secure
