/usr/X11R7/bin/xfs doesn't work at all for me, it immediately exits with
status 1 and doesn't print or log an error message.

The first line of /etc/X11/xdm/Xsession reads "#!SHELL_CMD" which of
course doesn't work. Looks like a failed substitution somewhere in the
build process.
