Thanks. Sorry for not updating yet. 4.99.70 doesn't panic with card in (so 
I don't provide answers to your other questions).

By the way, I had upgraded kernel before a meeting where I was to use my 
broadband card. When I got there it didn't work anymore. Luckily I had a 
couple old kernels available which booted.
