OK, I've been running 4.99.60 with Quentin's if_nfe patch, and so far I 
see no strange behavior at all.  Uptime is now about four hours;  before 
I was lucky if it stayed up for an hour.

I've even managed to run a 'build.sh tools' from my i386 laptop, 
accessing /usr/{src,obj} via an NFS export from the 4.99.60/nfe machine
without any problems.
