Indeed.  Just give me a dumb memory-mapped framebuffer!  (Though
admittedly I'm not trying to do video-frame-rate 3D or any such.)

Actually, I find that's true only if you get into higher-end (these
days, non-low-end, I guess) hardware - anything with a GPU, basically.

I have an acquaintance who works *under NDA* with GPU hardware, ie,
with access to as close to real hardware doc as exists outside the
providing company.

He tells me the errata lists are twice the size of the manual (by page
count).  I speculate the real reason the manufacturers don't document
their hardware publicly is that they're ashamed of how buggy it is.
