devfs doesn't exist and I doubt there is a consensus that it will
come to existence in the near future.

But the "compatibility baggage" in terms of wedges, dk and driver
data structures or the sysctl MIB is already there. I would hope
that making use of it may even prevent others from generating
'new compatibility baggage' in the future.
