I recommend to keep lua51 (and lua52, lua53, ...) around for the
foreseeable future as:

 - There is a community of people using at most Lua 5.1 in all their
projects, including new code.
 - Once one Lua version was integrated into a 3rd party software, there
is usually no reason to upgrade at all.
 - Lua is selfcontained and small.
 - LuaJIT reflects Lua 5.1.

There are some limitations of Lua 5.1/LuaJIT (like, no 64bit integer
type), but they are unimportant in their domain.
