The problem with upstream[1] is the author is not interested in
maintaining a Linux / BSD package and therefore would be hard to
convince to change version number scheme.
There is an explicit request at the bottom of the page[1] not to
bother the author Linux / BSD on changes.

This makes sense.
leot@ told me that the version number might decrease after such a
change, say for a given version 132, if the NetBSD version changed
from 2.132 to 0.1beta132 then (2.132 > 0.1beta132). And this would be
an issue with version numbering since the new one is smaller than the
old one. Any suggestions on how to handle this?
