1) installing existing binar packages with the new pkg_* tools, and
2) installing binary packages that were made with a "new" pkg_*
   on a (say) NetBSD 5.0 release machine?

From your mail I think #1 will work ok, but what about #2?
How do release pkg_* binaries deal with new binary packages that lack 
@dirrm (or even have new @-directives)?
