I missed the proposal to do this and resulting discussion on tech-pkg :-) I think it's very useful to have something that gives a working desktop without pulling in every single program. meta-pkgs/gnome is huge, and has many things that most people wouldn't want installed. So I think we should have some sort of gnome-mimimal that has panel, panel applets, terminal, gnome-session, etc. but not tons of "applications". What it's called is not that important.
