Not knowing what this is about, I want to note that while DESTDIR support
is not the default _now_ it will be in the future.
I would conclude from this decision  (see
http://mail-index.netbsd.org/tech-pkg/2008/01/09/0016.html)
that it is "kind of mandatory" or at least "strongly recommended" because
sooner or later we must deal with those problems anyway.
