gthumb not displaying filenames

I've installed the gthumb package, and started rpcbind, famd and dbus
daemons. Gthumb starts, and sees all my directories, but doesn't see any
of the image files in them. (Gthumb will display an image if I give it
the full path to one.) Any thoughts on what's wrong here, or how I might
debug this problem?
