In the meantime I discovered a programmers guide for the hardware.
Google for "bcm5365p.pdf". (I have no idea if this is actually
supposed to be public.)  Anyway, this seems to have a complete
description of the hardware.  (This includes information on
ubsec(4) and bce(4) btw.)  The switch appears to have all the
features of a decent managed switch.  VLANs, mirroring, QoS,
MAC address table stuff, statistics collection, etc.
