I can confirm it working via mplayer -tv fps=25 tv://. No system hangs,
display's at least at 640x480. Still have to dig some options to see how
to test other resolutions as -tv width=x:height=y obviously didn't do the
trick for x / y > 640 (due to uvideo debug output the cam should be able
to do more). For lower res there's no updates, instead I get select timeout's
looking like:

v4l2: select timeout ??% ??,?% 0 0 

But hey, it's no longer killing my system.

Thank you for taking it that far. I can't wait to see where the voyage
is going from here :)
