  | How can you tell which one outputs via HDMI? Is it just that HDMI
  | audio, if present, will always be hdaudio/hdafg, so assuming the
  | hardware has HDMI audio it has to be audio0, or is there more to it?

Which is 0 and which is 1 (and possibly more on some systems) all
depends upon the order in which autoconfig happens to encounter them,
unless you have wired them down in the kernel config file (no standard
build does that).

The hdafg for the HDMI audio will have a bunch of "digital out" jacks
(typically one for each HDMI port on the card, perhaps others for DP
and other connector types that might exist, never tried with one of those).

The hdafg for a regular audio card will have DAC and (usually) ADC connectors
for the speaker connections, and line in / micrphone in.

It is generally very easy to pick which is which (and fortunately, the
autoconfig will generally configure things in the same order every time
for a particular system - as long as the hardware isn't changed).
