It might be worth loading a new genfb kernel to see if you still get that

I have it building now. Will try it as soon as I get a chance.

I've finally managed to get a fresh -current built, installed and booted.
The behavior of a GENERIC kernel on my 233MHz MPC750 iMac is unchanged.
machfb produces an unusable display as noted before and illustrated in
John Klos' photos. atabus* attachment hangs the machine forever.

Booting in userconf mode and disabling machfb allows genfb to handle
the display. Disabling atabus allows the kernel to complete initiali-
zation and the machine will happily go multiuser on NFS.
