Re: Disk errors on PowerBook 180
If you use a build after 14 May 2026 new pmap changes have been made and I was
able to gain an extra ~700kB of memory to use.
Jason has been making lots of awesome changes to memory management for m68k
recently.
The system was faster/more responsive too.
One of the reasons as to why x11 takes 8 minutes can be too many fonts ensure
you move /usr/X11R7/lib/X11/fonts/100dpi (thats if both 75dpi and 100dpi are
populated) out out the fonts directory and restart /usr/rc.d/fccache.
I've also found that xterm is faster than the default uxterm.
If you really want a fast light-weight window manager there's twm which comes
with the X11 sets. (should already be there).
It gets better... if you add the lines from sys/arch/mac68k/conf/AUDIO or
build kernel=AUDIO and once booted run ./MAKEDEV audio in the dev directory
you'll get a console beep a tone generator and a full-duplex audio device.
For my PowerBook I set the low quality flag for the audio device which provdes
a 11025Hz mono audio device which works sutter free at 25MHz with programs
like audio/mikmod.
Best regards,
Nat
