Maybe try pkgsrc/chat/bitlbee -- technically not a text mode client, but 
an IRC->IM gateway server. The daemon runs locally as an IRC server so 
you can connect to it with whatever client you like (bitchx, Epic..) and 
from there it provides an interface to MSN, ICQ, Yahoo, and a couple 
other IM services..
