I'm using a mix of IDE -> CF card adapters and SATA disks.  It's been a while since I've created a restorecd, recently I've just been cheating and installing from the latest of Izumi's CDs then running sysupgrade on top of it.

I'd intended to do that on my spare qube as soon as I got time, but the time never seems to come.  Perhaps you could try?
