I've been using a Ali chipset usb/firewire combo card in mine, but as you say 
GENERIC doesn't have support for usb/firewire devices, mine is still a work in 
progress, I need to get the prolific usb>rs232 support working, there is no 
device entry in /dev & MAKEDEV claimes that ucom & uplcom are unknown devices.
