Fixed, I was using the command atactl setstandby to stop the disks and that
was generating the error, I just replace it with atactl setidle and I have
no problems now.

Claudio,

        I had a similar message to this when first experimenting - it's
partly to do 
with the DMA negotiation. The cure was simple - I used 40 pin IDE cables 
instead of the newer 80 pin cables, this forced the negotiation 
to 'downgrade'...
