How are these powered though? I know SSDs are fairly power-hungry. I added one to my Pinebook Pro, and it essentially overloaded the power circuits, so I removed it again. I am thinking of buying an SSD enclosure for the disk I have, but all of the ones I see have a single USB-C connector. It seems unlikely to me that the RPi can deliver enough power to that SSD though. In the old times, enclosures came with a separate power adapter, is there a way to provide power some other way these days?
I use Y adapter cables to provide extra power. They backfeed power, which can be helpful sometimes, as long as both the SSD / hard drive and the Pi are fed from the same USB power source. Something like this may be good for you:
