Same kind of problem over here... did an upgrade of an 1.3.3 system to 1.4 
yesterday and used a fresh make of windowmaker (no gcc2.7.x libs are 
linked against it.

However, just executing the server binary by itself just works fine.
startx/xdm choked on it.

After some twiddling with the windowmaker package I found out MIT-SHM was the
culprit, everything is just fine now.

System info: NetBSD-1.4, m68060, wmaker 0.52 package (slightly tweaked with 
--disable-shm)
 AGA display
