There's the clue we needed...
I have PREFER_PKGSRC set in my mk.conf. Disabling it leads to a
successful build.
I have always used this, mainly for Linux to minimize breakage from Yum
or apt upgrading dependencies behind pkgsrc's back. But I set it
unconditionally in my auto-pkgsrc-setup script, so it's enabled on
NetBSD as well. This is the first time on my 10+ years using pkgsrc
that it caused a problem.
So now the question is why glib2 doesn't like pkgsrc iconv on NetBSD.
