Another guess:

    pkg_info -a | grep iconv

returns nothing for me => glib's "iconv = auto" will definitely get
/usr/lib/libintl.so and not something else. Does it also return nothing
for you?

There's the clue we needed...

I have PREFER_PKGSRC set in my mk.conf. Disabling it leads to a successful build.

I have always used this, mainly for Linux to minimize breakage from Yum or apt upgrading dependencies behind pkgsrc's back. But I set it unconditionally in my auto-pkgsrc-setup script, so it's enabled on NetBSD as well. This is the first time on my 10+ years using pkgsrc that it caused a problem.

So now the question is why glib2 doesn't like pkgsrc iconv on NetBSD.
