  | I've been using xfig from pkgsrc on Solaris in recent years, and it
  | is always complaining that it can not find the correct fonts.

I have not seen that one.

  | Text in xfig is not scaled correctly while working on
  | screen,

I have seen something like that, but not exactly it - certainly
there are some issues with font handling, and ...

  | you always have to export the drawing to PostScript/PDF and
  | check the result there.

generally gives a better result for text than the xfig display
itself. However, at least for unangled text (horizontal) I
generally get something that isn't too far away, providing that
I'm not working at some absurdly large scale factor (which I
do sometimes).

Aside from that, fonts aren't something that I have really considered
very much - I do tend to have quite a lot installed however, including
all the "old" ones (xfig being an ancient program is more likely to
want those, I'd guess, than anything new).

Graphics programming is really not my thing, so I've never really
attempted to look inside xfig to see how it works.
