I'm running something different (ctwm) here.  But I totally
forgot that I have

.if !empty(.CURDIR:M*/editors/vim*)
CONFIGURE_ARGS+= --with-features=big
.endif

It would be a nice test, if that changes something for you.
In the end it could be some bug in vim itself and not xaw
or something.
