here it is working like a charm.  Maybe some bug in the
window manager?

$ uname -rsm
NetBSD 6.0_RC2 i386
$ pkg_info | grep vim-xaw
vim-xaw-7.3.653     Vim editor (vi clone) with X11 Athena GUI
