I can't help you with the firefox problem.
However, since a few days ago, at
ftp://ftp.netbsd.org/pub/pkgsrc/packages/NetBSD/i386/5.1_2011Q2
you can find about 14GB of binary packages.

I'm not sure why it's not linked yet to the default
