Got it to work finally.  Just installing ghostscript did not do it.  I had to 
uninstall cups, all of its dependencies and ghostscript.  Then I just installed 
ghostscript with the cups option (built cups automatically) and now it works.  
I am printing with the gutenprint51-lib driver.  Thank you for all your help.
